In Moonlight, viewers are introduced to a young Chiron (then played by Alex Hibbert). As a teen, Chiron (now played by Ashton Sanders) continues his friendship with Kevin (now played by Jharrel Jerome), which becomes romantic, and Teresa, though Juan has since died. His relationship with his mother is strained as she's deeply into crack cocaine. An incident with bullying involving Kevin leads Chiron to be arrested.
Some time later, Chiron (now played by Trevante Rhodes) now goes by the name Black, a nickname Kevin once gave to him. He returns to Miami to reunite with his mother, now in a drug treatment center, and Kevin, though Kevin (now played by André Holland) doesn't recognize his friend, who is now a drug dealer, as the person he once knew.
