Promised Land Movie Quotes

"Promised Land" movie quotes highlight the drama movie which puts a spotlight on corporate greed and the controversial practice of fracking. The movie was written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski, who also star in the film, based on a story by Dave Eggers and was directed by Gus Van Sant who previously saw success with "Good Will Hunting" and "Milk." "Promised Land" opened in limited theaters in the United States on December 28, 2012, before it's wide release on January 4, 2013.

In "Promised Land," Matt Damon portrays the main character of Steve Butler, a highly successful salesperson for a large natural gas company. Steve, along with his sales partner Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand) are sent to close a small town on the concept of selling drilling rights to their farmland. This pair has seen great success in the past with Sue's no-nonsense approach and Steve's understanding of how farm life is affected by the changing economy, having grown up in a very similar situation himself.

But this sales trip is different from all the rest. Just as they are close to gaining the number of contracts needed to start drilling, Dustin Noble (John Krasinski), a local grassroots leader against fracking, gets in their way and soon many townspeople follow, including one vocal high school science teacher, Frank Yates (Hal Holbrook). Steve and Dustin fight for control of the land, the conversation and a woman, Alice (Rosemarie DeWitt) as both the good, bad and ugly sides of corporate warfare.

What are the best Promised Land quotes? Take a look and decide.

Like many movies released late in the year, "Promised Land" is hoping to receive some recognition come award season but it will have good competition including from "Django Unchained," "Killing Them Softly," "Hitchcock," "Skyfall," "Lincoln," "Flight," "Playing for Keeps," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Anna Karenina," "This Must Be the Place," "Cloud Atlas," "Wreck-It Ralph," "Nobody Walks," "The Sessions," "Red Dawn," "Chasing Mavericks," "Rise of the Guardians," "Argo," and "Looper."
Promised Land Movie Quotes,

Do You Know What We're Capable Of?
Steve Butler: "We're a $9 Billion company. Do you know what we're capable of?"
Dustin Noble: "Do you?"

Steve throws around the figure of being from a $9 Billion company like it's something Dustin should fear. Instead, Dustin asks Steve to ask himself the same question.
Not the Guy with All the Answers
Steve Butler: "I'm sorry. I don't mean to interrupt you, Mr?"
Frank Yates: "Yates, my name is Frank Yates."
Steve Butler: "Mr. Yates, are you with an environmental group?"
Frank Yates: "Ha, no."
Steve Butler: "Well, what line of work are you in, sir?"
Frank Yates: "I'm a teacher at the high school."
Steve Butler: "A teacher?"
Frank Yates: "I teach science. What about you, Mr?"
Steve Butler: "Okay, yeah, ha, I deserved that. My name is Steve Butler. I'm a consultant here with Global. I only caught the tail end of what you were saying but you seem like someone who's done his homework. Could I ask you though, where'd you get your information?"
Frank Yates: "Mr. Butler, you and I both know the information you and I've been talking about is vast and detailed."
Steve Butler: "You're probably right, I'm certainly, I'm not the guy with all the answers."
Frank Yates: "Oh, then you'd be the perfect guy for them to send here to deny everything!"

When Steve arrives to talk to the townspeople about the idea of drilling for gas under their farms, he was not prepared to meet Frank Yates. Suffice it to say, their first meeting was not one to write home about.
Your Cooperation is Valuable
Dustin Noble: "See, I know everything about your company. I know what you do. I know how to beat it."
Steve Butler: "You know how to beat it? What, by, by, by, telling bulls*** sob stories and singing f***iing Springsteen?"
Sue Thomason: "Listen, you're just a kid who doesn't understand he's in way over his head on this one. We're already signed more than enough leases to start development in this town. You're too late."
Dustin Noble: "I really wouldn't underestimate these people."
Sue Thomason: "I don't. Now, I know you think what you're doing is right and I really admire that commitment but your presence here only confuses people. But we appreciate what you're doing and we'd like to make a donation to your organization. Your cooperation is valuable to us."
Dustin Noble: "You've gotta be kidding me."

Eager to hush Dustin and his grassroots campaign against them, Sue offers to make a donation to Dustin's organization in exchange for his cooperation. Dustin is partially surprised by the move and partially humored.
You're a Good Man, Steve
Frank Yates: "You're a good man, Steve. I just wish you weren't doing this."

High school science teacher sees the kind side of Steve and understands why he's come to their town to contract drilling, but also sees the good side of Steve that would come if he wasn't drinking the corporate Kool-Aid.
It's My Birthday
Alice: "Two more please… Well I don't know what your problem is. It's my birthday."
Steve Butler: "I have no excuse."
Alice: "Let me guess, 40, married, marketing, two kids?"
Steve Butler: "38, stripper-slash-waitress but born to be a singer"
Alice: "F*** you, I'm a teacher!"
Steve Butler: "No, no, I was talking about me. You want to see a dance? It's $100."
Alice: "I wouldn't give you $30."
Steve Butler: "But you haven't seen my moves"
Alice: "Okay all right, now you're creeping me out."
Steve Butler: "I'm Steve"
Alice: "Alice"
Steve: "Wow, you're going pretty big for a school night, Alice."
Alice: "It's my birthday"
Steve: "Oh, right, right"
Alice: "Well actually, tomorrow"
Steve: "So they just give you your day off for your birthday or do you have to just tell the kids you have a stomach bug?"
Alice: "Okay first off I resent the implication that I can't hold my liquor and secondly we watch videos sometimes for the first two periods."
Steve: "Ha ha, just sometimes, right? Smart"

When Alice and Steve meet at the bar sparks fly instantly. This quick connection sets the tone for a great deal of interaction and sadness for both.
This Town, This Life, It's Dying
Steve Butler: "This town, this life, it's dying. You all see it coming and you jerk don't get out of the way."

When things don't quite go his way, Steve goes off on a couple of young punks in the local bar. Not a wise move, Steve.
My Farm is Gone
Dustin Noble: "Hi everybody. I'm here because my farm is gone. The land just turned brown and it died. It's happened to one of us. It can happen to all of us."

Just when Steve is close to sealing the deal with nearly everyone in town, Dustin Noble, an environmental activist speaks up and tells the townspeople the other side of the story.
Do You Have What It Takes?
Dustin Noble: "You like your job, Steve? You like what you do?"
Steve Butler: "Yeah, on days like this, yeah, I do." [to barmaid] "Thanks, Jess. Get my friend here a beer, one of those fancy imported ones, maybe like a granola bar to go with it."
Dustin Noble: "Do you have what it takes, Steve? Do you think you have what it takes"
Steve Butler: "Oh, to beat you? Yeah, absolutely."
Dustin Noble: "Hey, you just might."
Steve Butler: "Hey man, I'll drink to that."
Dustin Butler: [to Alice] "Hey there she is. You ready to go?"
Alice: "Yeah"
Dustin Noble: "Hey, Steve, thanks again for the beer. That was really sweet. I'm gonna take it to go. Hope you guys have a good night. Thanks, Jess."
Alice: "I'm really looking forward to the fair tomorrow. It should be fun."
Steve Butler: "Yeah"

As revealed in this scene, it's not just the drilling rights of the land that Steve and Dustin are on opposite sides of, it's also Alice.
The Only Way They Have to Get Back
David Churchill: "You guys have closed more towns than the team behind you by triple digits. How do you do that?"
Steve Butler: "I grew up in a large farming community, football Fridays, tractor pulls, cow-tipping, all of it. I mean, I'm one of two guys in my graduating class who went to college and studied something other than agriculture. It's the biggest fight my grandfather and I had."
David Churchill: "It's just the pride, I guess."
Steve Butler: "No, it's delusional self-mythology. It's bulls***. We had a Caterpillar plant down in Davenport, a few miles away. They close that down my junior year. I didn't think anything of it. By the time my senior prom rolled around I got to see just how many eggs we had to stand on. I mean, the whole farming town fantasy was just shattered. The truth was, without the plant, without the industry, we had nothing. My whole town was, I'm not selling them natural gas, I'm selling them the only way they have to get back."

When asked why he can be so successful, way more than anyone else doing the same thing, Steve speaks from experience and shares his story of growing up poor in the sticks. He knows the mindset of these farmers and knows how to talk them into almost anything.
It's Simple Math
Steve Butler: "Mr. Richards, I'm just being straight with you. It's simple math. Best case scenario, there is $30 million under your town. .1% is $30,000, that's what I'm authorized of offer you. I'm also telling you it's a one-time offer. Don't get up. Don't do that. I've been at this table before and it does not end well. Look, I don't fault you for trying, but I'm telling you, don't do this because we will walk away. We always do. And after every single town within three states has signed up for this and the blows of this economy are almost unbearable, we're going to come back and we will offer you nothing. We will offer this town nothing. Every contract we've signed, every piece of the pie we've offered, it all goes away and we buy this place for nothing. Now please, let some other guy be last."

At the end of the day Steve has to close these deals and that means if someone is standing in his way, he has to get tough with them. In this case, Steve pulls out a little threat to get Mr. Richards to agree to their plans.
