"On the Road" movie quotes bring the 1957 coming of age novel of the same name by Jack Kerouac to life in feature film format. The drama movie, directed by Walter Salles, was produced by Francis Ford Coppola based on a screenplay by Jose Rivera. If first premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival where it competed for the Palme d-Or then opened for full release on December 21, 2012, in the United States.
In "On the Road," Sam Riley portrays the main character of Sal Paradise, who also serves as a narrator. Sal is an aspiring young writer in New York City in 1947 whose father dies suddenly, shaking Sal greatly. Around the same time, Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited and charming ex-con, enters Sal's life and they connect instantly. In an attempt to move forward and heal from the death of his father, as well as expand his repertoire of personal experiences to make him a better writer, Sal decides to follow Dean on a road trip across the country.
With Dean's 16-year-old wife Marylou (Kristen Stewart), who is equally liberated as she is beautiful, in tow, they make their way across the United States. Along the way they meet people, find conflicts and watch as their personalities rub off on each other. But as Sal takes on parts of Dean and as Dean takes on parts of Sal, both wonder what type of person they ultimately want to be. Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Kirsten Dunst and Elisabeth Moss all co-star in the film.

I'm Burnin' Up
Dean Moriarty: "I don't know what's wrong with me. I do all these dumb things. I think in these distorted ways. Now I'm burnin' up. I'm scared I'm gonna lose all the wisdom I ever learned, Sal."
As much as Dean enjoys his fast and hard lifestyle, eventually it was bound to catch up to him, as it did here when he realized how far he had spiraled out of control.
My Life on the Road
Sal Paradise: "I first met Dean in New York not long after my father died. I was a young writer trying to take off. Dean just raced in society. He had just married a 16-year-old chick named Marylou. Becoming a Dean Moriarty began the part of my life I could call my life on the road."
As Sal narrates, he discusses the reason behind his choice to follow Dean and Marylou in a cross-country road trip that would change the lives of all involved.
Staying Very Long
Camille: "Come on, don't tell me you New York intellectuals don't dance."
Sal Paradise: "You didn't say you had a nice voice."
Camille: "I don't have a nice voice."
Sal Paradise: "Yeah, yeah, you do."
Camille: "Thanks. Are you staying in Denver very long?"
Sal Paradise: "I've got the feeling I won't be staying very long."
Camille: "Yeah, not enough hours in the day."
Sal Paradise: "Right"
A stop in Denver leads to unexpected interactions for both Dean and Sal. Sal meets a lovely lady, Camille, while Dean meets some people who instantly clash with him.
Long Lost Brother
Sal Paradise: "Somehow Dean reminded me of some long lost brother. I began to learn from him as much as he probably learned from me."
Something about Dean just made Sal grasp on immediately after they met. As Sal began to take on characteristics of Dean, Dean also began to take on characteristics of Sal.
Something Normal
Sal Paradise: "Can't you wait until we're in Fresco?"
Marylou: "I don't care. Dean's going to leave me anyway."
Sal Paradise: "When are you going to go back to Denver?"
Marylou: "I don't know. I don't know what I'm going to do. I could go back to my fiance."
Sal Paradise: "Fiance?"
Marylou: "He's a sailor. He's been away a while. He's nice."
Sal Paradise: "That's good."
Marylou: "I wish Dean wasn't so crazy now."
Sal Paradise: "You could be wishing that the rest of your life."
Marylou: "I just want a house, a baby, you know, something normal. I really do want that."
Dean Moriarty: "I just had a great idea. You guys are going to love it."
While driving, Marylou confesses what she really wants out of life, a normal existence with that stable house and family. She too is at a crossroads with one option highly normal and the other quite the opposite.
The Only People Who Interest Me
Sal Paradise: "It wasn't only because I was a writer. I wanted new experiences and I wanted to know Dean more. And I shan't laugh as usual as I did my whole life after the people who interested me. Cause the only people who interest me are the mad ones. The ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like roman candles across the night."
Sal was looking for inspiration, life experiences to make him a better writer and better person. Dean provided a new outlook on life, someone who could be examined, someone who was passionate about life and someone who Sal could be inspired by.
Illusions, Tricks
Old Bull Lee: "Dean does not feel responsibility towards others. He gives illusions, tricks."
As Old Bull Lee explained, Dean's lifestyle choices were exciting and full of adventure but at the same time it wasn't as glamorous as Dean would like it to be. At the end of the day, Dean was far from perfect.
