The Hundred-Foot Journey Movie Quotes
"The Hundred-Foot Journey" movie quotes tell the heartwarming story of one stiff restauranteur who is challenged and changed by a talented Indian chef who invades her quaint French town. The comedy-drama film was adapted into a screenplay by Steven Knight from the book of the same title by Richard C. Morais. "The Hundred-Foot Journey," which was directed by Lasse Hallström and produced by the likes of Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, opened on August 8, 2014.

In "The Hundred-Foot Journey," young and brilliant chef Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) and his family move to the South of France after they are forced out of India. Hassan's father, Papa (Om Puri), is determined to open a restaurant and finds a suitable location. That location however is just 100 feet from an acclaimed and Michelin-starred French restaurant.

Papa and Hassan's restaurant angers the French restaurant's proprietress, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), a woman who takes her business very seriously. But when Madame Mallory tastes the food Hassan prepares, she knows he is special and takes him under her wing. This only angers Papa, who feels she has stolen his son. With only 100 steps dividing the two restaurants, Madame Mallory and Papa must find a way to coexist, perhaps over one thing they both love: food.

"The Hundred-Foot Journey" opens alongside other fabulous movies including "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Get On Up," "Hercules," "Lucy," "Magic in the Moonlight," "A Most Wanted Man," "Happy Christmas," "Planes: Fire & Rescue," "Sex Tape," "Wish I Was Here, "And So It Goes, "Dawn of Planet of the Apes," "A Long Way Down," "Tammy," "Earth to Echo," "Deliver Us from Evil," "Transformers: Age of Extinction," "Snowpiercer," and "Begin Again,".

Madame Mallory Knows in Just One Mouthful
Marguerite: "Madame Mallory knows in just one mouthful if a chef has the potential to be great."

Hassan: "Madame, I would like to make you an omelette."

In a turning point in their relationship, Hassan is determined to impress Madame Mallory with his culinary powers. Spoiler: He is successful.
I Suggest You Turn It Down
Madame Mallory: "If you food is anything like your music, I suggest you turn it down."

Papa: "I will turn the music down but I will turn the heat up!"

Madame Mallory: "You don't know when enough is enough!"
Papa: "Enough of you!"
Hassan: "Papa, relax"
Papa: "What do you mean, relax? You'll spoil the whole game."

Madame Mallory offers some unsolicited advice to her competitors. Papa isn't interested in this and only gets more fired up by the challenge.
Why Change a Recipe That Is 200 Years Old?
Hassan: "I added some spices."
Madame Mallory: "Why change a recipe that is 200 years old?"
Hassan: "Maybe 200 years is long enough."

Madame Mallory is surprised when Hassan changes a 200-year-old recipe without her blessing. He isn't interested in her reasoning for keeping the recipe the same, however.
You Seduce His Mind with Your Awful, Tasteless, Empty Sauces
Papa: "Do you hear me up there? I say, no, don't steal my children!"
Madame Mallory: "I will report you, Mr. Kadam, for making too much noise."
Papa: "And I will report you for attempted child abduction!"
Madame Mallory: "Have you even asked the boy what he wants?"
Papa: "You deliberately seduce him! You seduce his mind with your awful, tasteless, empty sauces, with your pitiful little squashed bits of garlic!"
Madame Mallory: "That is called subtlety of flavor."
Papa: "It's called meanness of spirit! If you have a spice, use it! Don't sprinkle it. Spoon it in!"
Madame Mallory: "What you don't seem to understand that there is such a thing as enough is enough!"
Papa: "Yes, enough of you, always up there like a queen or something! You tell him, it's classical. What's classical?"
Madame Mallory: "Classical comes from the word class and that is what he will learn in my kitchen. He will learn how to cook with class."

Papa confronts Madame Mallory about taking his son, Hassan, under her wing to learn French cuisine. He doesn't take kindly to her abduction but really, she's only trying to improve Hassan's skills.
He Is Better
Papa: "Is he as good as he thinks he is?"
Madame Mallory: "He is better."

They might not get along about other things but Papa and Madame Mallory can agree on one thing: Hassan is better than a great chef.
I Can Clean My Own Wall
Papa: "I can clean my own wall."
Madame Mallory: "The outer wall is not your wall. I know because I had a clever plan to have it built very high so nobody could see your restaurant."

Papa is surprised to find Madame Mallory cleaning graffiti from his wall. He soon learns that it isn't quite his wall after all.
It Is a Passionate Affair
Madame Mallory: "Last night, we served this in this restaurant. The cuisine is not an old, tired marriage. It is a passionate affair."

Mayor: "The restaurant is her entire life ever since her husband died."

Insight into Madame Mallory is given by her perfectionist behavior in her kitchen and some background from the mayor. With little else, she takes her restaurant work very seriously.
Raise Your Hand, Hassan!
Papa: "We open Saturday night! My son is the best Indian chef in Europe. Raise your hand. Don't feel shy."
Mahira: "Don't raise your hand!"
Papa: "Raise your hand, Hassan. I'm talking to you."

Papa speaks to the locals about the opening of his new restaurant. In the process, he also successfully embarrasses his son.
People Here Don't Eat Those Things
Mansur: "100 feet across the street, the restaurant has a Michelin star. The President of France dines there."
Papa: "Can Mr. President order murghi masala cooked the way Hassan cooks?"
Mansur: "People here don't eat those things."
Papa: "They have never tried. Now they sell!"

Everyone tries to convince Papa that French folks don't eat Indian food. Despite that fact, and the issue of a very good restaurant sitting just steps away, Papa is unconvinced that opening an Indian restaurant is a bad choice.
This Is Private Property
Papa: "I want to buy this restaurant."
Madame Mallory: "Bonjour. Can I help you?"
Hassan: "Sorry, sorry, we were just looking around here."
Madame Mallory: "This is private property."
Papa: "Excuse me, do you own this property?"
Madame Mallory: "No, no"
Papa: "Oh, that means you are trespassing too. Do you know the owner of this place?"
Madame Mallory: "Yes, I know them very well. They've gone back to Paris but they asked me to keep an eye out for them."
Papa: "Oh, I bet you do. How much are they asking?"
Hassan: "Papa, please!"
Papa: "One minute"
Madame Mallory: "Oh, you must understand that a property of this size in this village would be very expensive and, well, I heard you ask for a discount in Claude's hotel and…"
Hassan: "Papa, you didn't!"
Papa: "Madame, asking for a discount doesn't mean I'm poor. It means I'm thrifty."

Hassan and Papa get the cold shoulder from Madame Mallory on their first meeting. When Papa inquires about a restaurant for sale, Madame Mallory assumes that just because he is thrifty that they couldn't afford such a place.
