Beasts of the Southern Wild Movie Quotes

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" movie quotes provide narrative to the fantasy drama film starring young actress Quvenzhane Wallis. Benh Zeitlin directed the film, which he co-wrote with Lucy Alibar based on Alibar's one-act play "Juicy and Delicious." "Beasts of the Southern Wild" was released on June 27, 2012, to critical acclaim and was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture.

In "Beasts of the Southern Wild," Quvenzhane Wallis portrays Hushpuppy, a young girl in a small Southern Louisiana bayou town of Bathtub. Hushpuppy sees the world differently of most folks and is wise beyond her years, quite the difference from her custodial father, Wink. As a massive storm approaches, one destined to wipe out their tiny village, Hushpuppy and Wink remain vigilant and optimistic.

The storm comes and goes leaving the residents of the Bathtub to revert to their more primitive days for catching and eating meat and fish. Wink tries his best to give Hushpuppy the skills she will need to survive on her own as he realizes due to failing health, his time on this planet is coming to an end. Though all of the adversity, including not knowing her mother, Hushpuppy remains a strong and positive young girl who stays determined to do big things with her life.

While the performance from six-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis is one to be remembered, it is not the only one making a case for Oscar nominations. Other films who received looks included "Django Unchained," "Killing Them Softly," "Hitchcock," "Skyfall," "Lincoln," "Flight," "Playing for Keeps," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Anna Karenina," "This Must Be the Place," "Cloud Atlas," "Wreck-It Ralph," "Nobody Walks," "The Sessions," "Red Dawn," "Chasing Mavericks," "Rise of the Guardians," "Argo," and "Looper."
Beasts of the Southern Wild Movie Quotes,

Little Piece of a Big, Big Universe

Hushpuppy: "When it all goes quiet behind my eyes, I see everything that made me flying around in invisible pieces. I see that I'm a little piece of a big, big universe."

Hushpuppy sees the world much differently from most children her age. She doesn't focus on the here and now, she sees the bigger picture and where in that world she fits.
Aurochs

Miss Bathsheba: "This here is an auroch, a fierce creature. Y'all better learn how to survive."

Prior to the storm hitting, Hushpuppy's teacher, Miss Bathsheba, teaches the class about the ancient creature of the auroch. Once a ruthless prehistoric predator, the aurochs were trapped in frozen ice caps decades ago however the melting of those caps could lead to the release of the aurochs.
The Whole Universe

Hushpuppy: "The whole universe depends on everything fitting together just right. If one piece busts, even the smallest piece, the entire universe will get busted."

As Hushpuppy explains, everything in this world is connected. One small shift in the natural order of things might seem minor but that one change might have a ripple effect that can spread far and wide.
Marietta

Achilles: "Here's to Marietta, dude. Here's to Marietta!"
Wink: "You better leave that alone, man."
Achilles: "Oh come on, partner. That's to Marietta."
Wink: "Man, I'm telling you. You better leave that alone."
Achilles: "What's the matter, you couldn't handle her?"
Wink: "Keep on talking. You keep on talking."

In a casual poking of fun, Wink's friend Achilles rips on Wink about Hushpuppy's mother. Wink puts up with the prodding for a minute but soon grows tired of the abuse.
Hearts Beating

Hushpuppy: "All the time, everywhere, everything's hearts are beating and squirting and talking to each other in ways I can't understand. Most of the time they probably be saying, 'I'm hungry or I gotta poop' or sometimes they be talking in codes."

Hushpuppy takes in everything around her, the animal life, the plants, the people. She analyses what she sees, she reflects upon it and thinks about it in ways most other people do not.
Beast It

Jean Battiste: "Come here, Hushpuppy. Come sit by your uncle Jean here. Let me show you how to do this. Here, baby, don't be scared of it. Keep turning it upside down, there you go. Now push it with your thumb. Good girl. That's it. Now be real careful. Take your knife and pop this off. That's beautiful."
Wink: "No, that's not how you all eat it. Beast it! Beast it! Show me you can do it. Come on! Come on! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it! Beast it!"

With little resources, the people of Bathtub are forced to go back to their roots to eat and survive. In this instance, that means breaking open a crab with their hands and eating it, like a beast.
We Ain't Going Nowhere

Hushpuppy: "They think we all gonna drown down here but we ain't going nowhere. The Bathtub had more holidays than the rest of the world."

Stronger than men much older than her, Hushpuppy perseveres through the storm and is confident that her small village will do the same. Despite what the rest of the world might be saying, they are not going anywhere.
No Time to Sit Around Crying

Hushpuppy: "It wasn't no time to sit around crying like a bunch of babies. We're going to make a camp right on top of the Bathtub. We got enough animals to eat until the water goes down."

Even in the face of tragedy following the storm, Hushpuppy remains positive. She sees what they have, not what they've lost, and how they can overcome the adversity.
We Stay Right Here

Hushpuppy: "One day, the storm's gonna blow, the ground's gonna sink and the water's gonna rise up so high ain't gonna be no Bathtub, just a whole bunch of water… But me and my daddy, we stay right here. We is who the earth is for."

Showing she is wise beyond her years, Hushpuppy does not stress over the storm that will soon destroy her town, instead she appreciates what she has, the beauty of the earth.
Hushpuppy

Hushpuppy: "In a million years when kids go to school, they're gonna know, there was a Hushpuppy and she lived with her daddy in the Bathtub."

Hushpuppy has big plans for her life and nothing, not even a storm, will stop in her way. Someday, she says, people will know her name.
