Sparkle Movie Quotes

"Sparkle" movie quotes touch on the good and bad sides of the music business in this remake of the 1976 film about a girl group looking for their shot at the big time. The period piece features the acting debut for "American Idol" star Jordin Sparks, who plays the title character of Sparkle Williams, but also sadly includes the final movie role for the late Whitney Houston, who portrays mother Emma. The film has been dedicated to Houston's memory.

The musical drama, directed by Salim Akil, follows a trio of sisters, Sparkle, Delores (Tika Sumpter) and Sister (Carmen Ejogo), who are looking for their big break into the Motown music scene in the 1960s. The girls have backing from their mother Emma, a former professional singer herself, as well as others, such as Sparkle's friend Stix (Derek Luke) but face a variety of pressures from the industry.

Instead of sticking together for the benefit of all, the sisters find themselves being torn apart by the hope of fame and fortune. Sister faces the brunt of the ugly side of the business when she gets involved with the abusive drug lord Satin (Mike Epps) but in the end, family has to prevail over everything else.

Just as the girls of "Sparkle" take the Motown world by storm, there were several other films that turned heads during the summer 2012 movie season. "The Campaign," "The Babymakers," "Ted," "Celeste and Jesse Forever," "Madea's Witness Protection," "Magic Mike," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" are just a handful of the best of 2012 in film.
Sparkle Movie Quotes,

Don't Lose It

Emma: "I always knew you had the gift. It makes me feel I done something right. Don't lose it."

Getting a pep talk from your mom is always comforting but it means so much more coming from someone who has been in your shoes as a former member of the same profession. That's exactly what the sisters get here when mother Emma, a former professional singer, reassures them.
Y'all Are Late

Emma: "Y'all are late... I know y'all don't love each other that much."

Like most kids, when there's something lucrative going on, sneaking out of the house isn't anything out of the question. It however gets tricky when Sparkle, Delores and Sister get caught sneaking back in the house, especially when mother Emma finds them snuggled up in a tiny bed.
Admit That You Want It

Sparkle: "My mom used to sing professionally."
Stix: "Maybe you be like your mom and never reach your goals but don't fall short because you can't admit that you want it?"

Sparkle, struggling with how her sisters have reacted to the potential for fame, confides in Stix about the situation. He reassures her that she doesn't have to follow in her mother's footsteps and never achieve her goals but she'll never know without trying.
You Have a Gift

Sparkle: "Why would the lord give me this gift if I wasn't supposed to use it."
Emma: "It takes a lot of faith to do this, Sparkle. You have a gift, it's just how you use it. Believe in yourself, Sparkle. I'm so proud of you."

Stuck at a crossroads of what to do with her musical career, Sparkle consults her mother, Emma, for some advice. As a former singer herself, Emma encourages Sparkle to use her gift of song despite the negative pressures.
Hi in Harmony

Stix: "This is Mr. Robinson from Columbia Records."
Sparkle, Sister and Delores: (together) "Hi"
Mr. Robinson: "They even say 'hi' in harmony."

Upon meeting Mr. Robinson, an executive from Columbia Records, for the first time, the girls make a subtle, yet striking first impression when they even say "hi" in a perfect harmonic pitch.
You Gotta Jump on It

Sister: "When you see a train that's going to get you where you want to go, you gotta jump on it."

There's no doubt that getting into the music business is no easy task but taking an easy route to instant success might be too good to be true. That's the battle Sister and Sparkle have when Sister pushes the girls into a shady deal.
A Cautionary Tale

Emma: "Was my life not enough of a cautionary tale for you?"

As the daughters of a former professional singer, the girls know a little bit about how absolutely brutal the music business can be. That cautionary tale wasn't enough to keep them away from that ugly side of the business.
Girl Groups

Stix: "Girl groups are hotter than ever right now. You should be together, singing. Y'all gonna take over."

After hearing Sparkle sing, Stix meets her sisters and sees the potential they have as a possible girl group in the booming Motown scene in the 1960s.
Go Out There and Look Pretty

Sister: "Just go out there and look pretty."
Sparkle: "But this isn't what we rehearsed!"
Sister: "I know what I'm doing."

After a lot of preparation, the girls finally get a shot at performing in front of a live crowd. But at the last minute, and with a lot on the line, Sister changes the plans. Does Sister actually know best or is someone else pulling her strings?
Make You Want To Dance

Emma: "Yeah, y'all like that, huh? Make you want to dance, huh?"
Delores: "Get it, mama!"
Emma: "I'm gon get it and you will too. Keep dancin' like that and you're gonna bring home some kids you can't feed."

In the trailer for "Sparkle," we're introduced to the Williams family with single mother Emma and a trio of sisters, Sparkle, Sister and Delores, along with the music of the era, 1960s Motown sound.
