"Sparkle" movie quotes touch on the good and bad sides of the music business in this remake of the 1976 film about a girl group looking for their shot at the big time. The period piece features the acting debut for "American Idol" star Jordin Sparks, who plays the title character of Sparkle Williams, but also sadly includes the final movie role for the late Whitney Houston, who portrays mother Emma. The film has been dedicated to Houston's memory.
The musical drama, directed by Salim Akil, follows a trio of sisters, Sparkle, Delores (Tika Sumpter) and Sister (Carmen Ejogo), who are looking for their big break into the Motown music scene in the 1960s. The girls have backing from their mother Emma, a former professional singer herself, as well as others, such as Sparkle's friend Stix (Derek Luke) but face a variety of pressures from the industry.
Instead of sticking together for the benefit of all, the sisters find themselves being torn apart by the hope of fame and fortune. Sister faces the brunt of the ugly side of the business when she gets involved with the abusive drug lord Satin (Mike Epps) but in the end, family has to prevail over everything else.
Just as the girls of "Sparkle" take the Motown world by storm, there were several other films that turned heads during the summer 2012 movie season. "The Campaign," "The Babymakers," "Ted," "Celeste and Jesse Forever," "Madea's Witness Protection," "Magic Mike," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" are just a handful of the best of 2012 in film.Sparkle Movie Quotes,
