"If I Stay" movie quotes follow the story of one girl who must choose between life and death when she's trapped in a coma. Based on the novel of the same name by Gayle Forman, the romantic drama film was adapted into a screenplay by Shauna Cross and directed by R. J. Cutler. "If I Stay" opened in theaters in the United States on August 22, 2014.
In "If I Stay," teenager Mia (Chloë Grace Moretz) finds herself at a place where she must make a life-changing decision between following her dreams of playing the cello and studying at the prestigious Juilliard or giving that up to stay with her beloved boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley). The decision weighs on her but in comparison, is really nothing compared to another choice she is about to make.
After Mia, her mother, Kat (Mireille Enos), father, Denny (Joshua Leonard) and brother Teddy (Jakob Davies) are in an auto accident, Mia is the lone survivor and in a coma. She's given 24 hours to observe the life around her in an out-of-body experience, as well as the choice whether she lives or dies. With a lot at stake for her life, Mia finds this decision overwhelming, to say the least.
"If I Stay" is one of several highly anticipated summer 2014 movies alongside "The Expendables 3," "Let's Be Cops," "Life After Beth," "Frank," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "The Hundred-Foot Journey "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Get On Up," "Hercules," "Lucy," "Magic in the Moonlight," "A Most Wanted Man," "Happy Christmas," "Planes: Fire & Rescue," "Sex Tape," "Wish I Was Here, "And So It Goes, and "Dawn of Planet of the Apes."
If I Stay Movie Quotes,
This Feeling I'm About to Mess Up My Entire Life
Mia: "Why do I have this feeling I'm about to mess up my entire life?"
Adam: "You can't hide in that rehearsal room forever. It's too late. I see you."
Mia is at a crossroads in life. She wants to pursue a career as a musician, but that means busting out of her comfort done and leaving her boyfriend. This decision is weighing heavily on her and it shows.
Life Is One Thing Then In an Instant It Becomes Something Else
Mia: "You know how when you meet someone and they already are the person they're meant to be? That was Adam. Nobody outside of Portland had ever heard of his band but he already was somebody. Me, not so much. It's it amazing how life is one thing then in an instant it becomes something else? Like here I am, Mia, the girl who thinks about the cello and Adam just like that…"
Mia describes how perfect her life was, at least in meeting Adam, before the accident. But then, in one instant, that all changed.
I'm Still Here And I'm Still Crazy In Love with You
Adam: "I'm still here and I'm still crazy in love with you. You're my whole, Mia. Please stay."
Sitting by her bedside, Adam begs Mia to stay with them in the living. Of course she wants to be with him, but the choice is the hardest she's ever faced in her life.
It's Very Inconvenient to Fall in Love
Mia: "If we weren't musicians, we could just go to college together."
Kat: "It's very inconvenient to fall in love at your age, especially if it's the real thing. Life is this big, fat, gigantic, stinking mess. That's the beauty of it too."
Mia unloads to her mother about her decision and wishes things could be less complicated. As Kat points out, love is never easy and often very complicated.
If You Live, If You Die, It's All Up to You
Mia: "Mom, daddy, dad, am I dying?"
Nurse Ramirez: "Here's the secret, baby. If you live, if you die, it's all up to you. So whatever fight you got in you, you gotta pull it out now."
Mia gets the first glimpse of the aftermath of the crash. In addition to learning that she's having an out of body experience, she also learns that if she lives or dies is in her hands.
I Hear It Gets Pretty Wild at the Symphony
Denny: "Adam's here."
Kat: "You kids be careful out there. I hear it gets pretty wild at the symphony."
Mia's mother, Kat, jokes about the evening she and Adam have planned. For most kids, a date to the symphony isn't exactly fun times but for these two, it's perfect.
That's the Ceiling
Mia: "What's that?"
Adam: "Where you'll be auditioning for Juilliard, that's the ceiling. I figured, you know, if you look at it every night, it won't seem so scary when you get there."
Knowing she is terrified of her audition, Adam paints Mia's bedroom ceiling to look like the ceiling at the theater where she will be auditioning for Juilliard. This kind gesture is meant to put her at ease, but that might take more than just some paint.
How Am I Supposed to Decide This?
Mia: "How am I supposed to decide this? How can I possibly stay without mom and dad? How can I leave without Teddy? Or Adam? This is too much. I don't even understand how it all works. Why am I here in the state that I'm in or how do I get out of it if I wanted to? If I were to say, I want to wake up, would I wake up right now? But in spite of it, I believe it's true. I heard the nurse's words. I am running the show. Everyone is waiting on me. I decide, I know that now, and that terrifies me more than anything else that's happened today."
Mia tries to process the decision before her, to live or die. She doesn't understand how she got to this place or why the decision is hers and doesn't have the slightest clue what to do.
