Philomena Movie Quotes
"Philomena" movie quotes tell the true life story of one mother, along with a journalist, who search for the son she gave up 50 years earlier. The British drama film was directed by Stephen Frears using a screenplay by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith. "Philomena" opened in the UK on November 1, 2013, then in the US on November 27, 2013.

In "Philomena," out of work journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) is pitched a story about a woman, Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), who has been searching for the son she was forced to give up for adoption 50 years earlier as a teen in Ireland. He hesitantly agrees to help her investigate and the pair begin tracking down any leads as to son Anthony's whereabouts. While the nuns at the convent at which Philomena was forced to live provided no help, Martin was able to learn that Anthony was living in America as a Republican government official.

Martin and Philomena travel to the states to learn more about Anthony only to find that he died nine years earlier from AIDS. As Philomena meets Anthony's friends and longtime partner, she expresses sadness that, just like she held her secret of this son, Anthony had to hide his homosexuality as being gay is frowned upon by Republicans. Though he is long gone, Philomena does not stop in looking for any hope that Anthony had tried to contact her, a mission that takes her back to her days at the convent.

"Philomena" received critical acclaim after its release but it wasn't the only film to receive praise in late 2013. Others included "The Wolf of Wall Street, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" "Her," "American Hustle," "Saving Mr. Banks," August: Osage County, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Out of the Furnace," "12 Years a Slave," "Frozen," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Captain Phillips," "Gravity," "Don Jon," "Rush, and "Prisoners".
Philomena Movie Quotes,

Big Momma's House
Martin: "Shall we go for a walk? Get rid of the jet lag? You said you wanted to visit the Lincoln Memorial."
Philomena: "We could go and see Mr. Lincoln or we could watch on television 'Big Momma's House.' It's about a little black man pretending to be a fat black lady. They just showed some of it on the television and they'll all chasing after him. It looked hilarious, Martin!"

With Washington, DC, right outside their door for sightseeing, Martin suggests they go for a walk. Philomena on the other hand is more interested in watching the latest American comedy movie on pay per view.
Human Interest Story
Jane: "I know this woman. She had a baby. She's kept it secret for 50 years."
Martin: "You're talking about a human interest story and that's, I don't do those."
Jane: "Why not?"

Martin: "You think I should do a human interest story?"

Martin is approached by Philomena's daughter, Jane, at a party and Jane pitches her mother's story to the out of work journalist. At first, Martin bashes the idea of writing a human interest story but later, the idea grows on him.
Did He Father Any Children?
Philomena: "Who's this fellow?"
Marcia: "That's his friend Pete."
Philomena: "And were you his girlfriend, Marcia?"
Marcia: "No, I don't know if you knew but he was gay. I used to accompany him when he used to go to official functions because being gay was frowned on in the Republican Party. But he was very charming and charismatic."
Philomena: "Tell me, did he father any children?"
Martin: "Philomena, Marcia has just told us that Anthony was gay."
Philomena: "Well I always knew that but I just wondered if he might be bi-curious."
Martin: "Bi-curious?"
Philomena: "A lot of the nurses I worked with were gay but one of them called Brenden told me he was bi-curious. I don't think he could make up his mind, Marcia."
Marcia: "He didn't have any children. I'm sorry."

Anthony's friend Marcia breaks the news to Philomena that Anthony was gay, something that does not cause any reaction in Philomena whatsoever. She's more wondering if he was bi-curious and if he fathered any children.
What If He Was Obese?
Philomena: "Now we're getting closer, all these years wondering if Anthony was in trouble or prison or goodness knows where. But as long as I didn't know I could always turn myself he was happy somewhere and that he was doing all right."
Martin: "Don't upset yourself."
Philomena: "What if he was obese?"
Martin: "Obese?"
Philomena: "I watched this documentary that says a lot of Americans are huge. What if that happened to him?"
Martin: "What on earth makes you think he'd be obese?"
Philomena: "Because of the size of the portions!"
As they learn more about Anthony and draw closer, Philomena wonders about his lifestyle and health. A documentary about obese Americans has her wondering if Anthony is obese, among other things.
You're Depressed
Doctor: "You're depressed."
Martin: "Well I got the sack. I'm unemployed."
Doctor: "Yes, but that wasn't your fault, was it?"
Martin: "That's why I'm depressed."

Having just been laid off as his job as a Labour government adviser, journalist Martin speaks to his doctor about his depression. He needs something to fill his days now that he's not working and faces a choice to continue writing, perhaps a book, take up running or go an entirely different direction.
Keep It a Secret His Whole Life
Mary: "And that's him with Pete Olsson. Mike and Pete were…"
Philomena: "That's all right, Mary. I know Anthony was a gay homosexual and we met Marcia who I believe was his beard. Is that right, Martin?"
Martin: "Yes, that's about right."
Philomena: "Must have been terrible, having to keep it a secret his whole life."

In meeting with Mary, Anthony's lifelong friend, Philomena expresses sorrow for how Anthony was forced to live his life. Like her, he had a secret that could not be told out of fear of condemnation.
I Used to Be
Philomena: "I only want to know if he's all right."
Martin: "Perhaps these older nuns can help us with some of the details."

Sister: "I don't think that's going to be possible… You're a journalist."
Martin: "I used to be."
Philomena: "Martin's a Roman Catholic."
Martin: "Yes, well no, I used to be."
…Martin: "My guess is that Anthony was adopted and sent to America."
Philomena: "I think I would like to go. I'd like to know if Anthony ever thought of me. I thought of him everyday."

Martin and Philomena head to the convent where Philomena lived when she gave birth to her son with the hopes of finding information about him. The sisters are of little help but Martin soon learns that son Anthony was sent to America, sending Philomena and Martin to chase that lead.
Hip Replacement
Martin: "Philomena, how are you?"
Philomena: "I had a hip replacement last year, Martin, titanium, so it won't rust."
Martin: "Otherwise I'd have to oil you like the tin man"
Philomena: "Is that right?"
Martin: "Oh no!"
Jane: "He's just joking, mom."

When Martin and Philomena meet, Martin jokes to Philomena about her hip replacement. She doesn't initially understand the joke, which only points to her sweet yet slightly naive nature.
I Did Not Abandon My Child
Philomena: "I did not abandon my child. He was taken from me."

Martin: "She's been looking for him. She spent her whole life trying to find him."

Philomena and Martin both comment on the situation they are in. Philomena defends herself by noting that it wasn't her choice to give Anthony up while Martin notes the length of her search to find him.
I Met Him
Philomena: "That's my Anthony."
Martin: "I met him."
Philomena: "Where?"
Martin: "At the White House"
Philomena: "Dear god! What was he like and did you remember anything he said?"
Martin: "Hello?"
Philomena: "Hello! Hello!"
Martin: "It might have been hi."
Philomena: "Oh, Martin!"

The pair makes a startling discovery when Martin realizes that he met Philomena's lost son, Anthony, many years ago. Even the slightest bit of info about Anthony, such as that he said hello, makes Philomena elated.
